Job Title: Y Pals (After School) Counselor

Base Pay Rate: $15.73/hr

Primary Function/Department: Youth Development

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Development, the Childcare Professional provides care for children in the Child Watch area of the YMCA and is responsible for the temporary care of children in accordance with the mission of the Bloomington-Normal YMCA. Counselors exemplify and foster our core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility which promote healthy child development by building healthy spirit, mind and body of camp attendees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.    Maintain attendance records.
2.    Maintain a safe and clean environment.
3.    Provide sensitive care to the child, meeting them where they are.
4.    Promote program opportunities to parents.
5.    Apply basic youth development principles through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity and involvement/empowerment of youth.
6.    Properly supervise children by following all applicable health and safety regulations and guidelines.
7.    Support and encourage children, providing specific examples of their actions and words, helping replace undesired behavior with positive choices.
8.    Communicate regularly needs related to supplies and materials.
9.    Build relationships with children, observing the group dynamics, and connecting with children who need extra attention and support.
10.    Report any suspicions of child abuse following protocols established with the required guidelines of the Illinois Mandated Reporter manual.
11.    Follow all health and safety regulations as outlined by YMCA procedures and state and county health regulations.
12.    Complete incident reports as required by YMCA guidelines.
13.    All other duties as assigned based upon departmental need.
14.    Regular and reliable attendance.

 

NECESSARY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Ability to interact with children and adults of all ages.
2.    Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
3.    Proficiency in understanding the developmental needs of youth.
4.    Minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Possession of Spanish language both written and spoken.
2.    CPR/AED certification (provided upon hire).
3.    Related higher education in child development/childcare.
4.    Proven experience in leadership, supervision, and childcare.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1.    Prolonged standing, bending, walking, hiking, climbing, and stretching.
2.    Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and activities.
3.    Occasional lifting up to 50+ pounds.
4.    Use of vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
5.    Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
6.    Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
7.    Exposure to outdoor elements.
