Job Title: Summer STEAM Camp Counselor (Bloomington Junior High)

Base Pay Rate: $16.73+/hr

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director of Youth Development, Youth Development Coordinator

Primary Function/Department: Youth Development

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of our Youth Development Coordinators and the Director of Youth Development, Summer STEAM Camp Counselors are responsible for supervising and providing care and YMCA STEAM curriculum to youth ages 7- 12 from 12:00 PM- 5:30 daily for the month of June with the option to accrue more hours at our summer camp sites as needed. Using the supplies, lesson plans, and equipment provided, counselors will help to initiate and mediate age-appropriate activities that help to foster a healthy mind, body, and spirit for kids enrolled to encourage a healthy lifestyle as well as physical, social-emotional, and mental growth. Counselors are also considered role-models and should embody the YMCA four core values of respect, responsibility, caring, and honesty in all interactions and communications with community members, YMCA members and all YMCA staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Actively participate in all program areas as assigned. Plan, prepare, and lead activities throughout the programming time with designated grade level.
2. Support the mental, physical, and social-emotional development of children by initiating and mediating interactions through activities that provide opportunities to advance each child’s mind, body and spirit.
3. Apply basic knowledge of youth development and youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity and involvement/empowerment of youth.
4. Properly and efficiently supervise youth at all times. Be aware of and implement all applicable health and safety regulations and guidelines.
5. Actively participate in all program areas as assigned. Plan, prepare and lead activities.
6. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
7. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
8. Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
9. Represent the Y when interacting with parents or community members.
10. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
11. Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Ability to design and implement recreational programming.
2.    Ability to interact with children and adults of all ages.
3.    Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
4.    Proficiency in understanding the developmental needs of youth.
5.    Demonstrated basic level knowledge and skill in designed camp program areas.
6.    Eighteen (18) years of age.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Counselors generally have regular relationships with YMCA leadership staff, Camp Directors, and the Director of Youth Development. Counselors are expected to assist with supervision of campers and in implementing all camp activities.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Counselors may be asked to use fire protection equipment, first-aid equipment, and specialty program equipment (e.g., ball pump or compass)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Possession of Spanish language both written and spoken.
2.    CPR/AED certification (provided upon hire).
3.    Related higher education in child development/childcare.
4.    Proven experience in leadership, supervision, and childcare.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1.    Prolonged standing, bending, walking, hiking, climbing, and stretching.
2.    Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and activities.
3.    Occasional lifting up to 50+ pounds.
4.    Use of vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
5.    Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
6.    Exposure to outdoor elements.
7.    Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
