Job Title: Day Camp Director                                          Base Pay Rate: $15

Reports to: Director of Youth Development                       Primary Function/Department: Youth Development

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Development, the Day Camp Director will be responsible for overall Elementary Summer Camp operations: tone-setting, communication, behavior management, scheduling, quality of activities, and parent communication. The Day Camp Director supports day camp counselors, ensures the physical, emotional and social safety of camp attendees, builds relationships with attendees and their household members, and leads the camp team by demonstrated strength in responsibility and leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Demonstrate professional role modeling at all times, demonstrating Y Core Values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.
  2. Support and encourage Youth Development team members, providing specific examples of their actions and words, helping staff replace undesired behavior with positive choices.
  3. Connect with each Youth Development team member and maintain a positive relationship.
  4. Coach Youth Development team members as they grow as counselors.
  5. Support Youth Development team members with challenging situations, and act as a liaison between the team and parents.
  6. Provide regular opportunities for team bonding and team building.
  7. Communicate regularly with the Youth Development team about weekly/daily plans.
  8. Communicate supply/material needs from counselors to Director of Youth Development.
  9. Work with the camp team to create an environment in which all campers are respectful of each other and the guidelines at camp.
  10. Build relationships with campers, observing the group dynamics of each group and connect with individual campers who need extra attention and support.
  11. Report any suspicions of child abuse following protocols established with the required guidelines of the Illinois Mandated Reporter manual.
  12. Discuss child’s behavior and possible solutions for success with parents and Director of Youth Development.
  13. Manage camp schedule - being aware of times or activities that may involve a high degree of emotional or social risk for camper and works with the camp team to mitigate risks.
  14. Stay informed of camp team choices involving discipline to ensure that campers receive fair and appropriate treatment.
  15. All other duties as assigned based upon departmental need.
  16. Regular and reliable attendance.

 

NECESSARY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to design and implement recreational programming.
  2. Ability to interact with children and adults of all ages.
  3. Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.
  4. Proven experience in peer leadership, supervision, and staff management.
  5. Proficiency in understanding the developmental needs of youth.
  6. Demonstrated basic level knowledge and skill in designed camp program areas.
  7. Two years of higher education or school age child development experience.
  8. Two years of day camp experience or a combination of youth programming and supervisory experience.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possession of Spanish language both written and spoken.
  2. CPR/AED certification (provided upon hire).

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Prolonged standing, bending, walking, hiking, climbing, and stretching.
  2. Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and activities.
  3. Occasional lifting up to 50+ pounds.
  4. Use of vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  5. Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
  6. Exposure to outdoor elements.
  7. Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crawling.
