(BLOOMINGTON, Ill.) – After a successful “Growing Together” Capital Campaign, the
Bloomington-Normal YMCA and Easterseals Central Illinois will begin construction on a
state-of-the-art 70,000 square foot community YMCA located on the campus of OSF St.
Joseph Medical Center. The groundbreaking ceremony took place Tuesday
September 22, 2020 at 10:00 am CDT at 2200 E. Washington Street in
Bloomington. “We’re completely overcome with joy and enthusiasm”, stated Julie
Dobski, Campaign Co-Chair. “We knew this campaign was going to be a challenge
considering a community-based campaign of this size hasn’t been attempted”.
The project has been under design by GRO Development and Farnsworth since
November 2019 and will be built on the campus of OSF St Joseph Medical Center at the
corner of Washington Street and St Joseph Drive in Bloomington. The vision is to build
a welcoming, inspiring, and uplifting place that fosters youth development, enhances
healthy living, and unites us all in social responsibility. Amenities to achieve this vision
include; a chapel, a warm water/recreational pool with an indoor splash pad, an eightlane
25 yard competitive swimming pool, a walking/jogging track, a gymnasium with
four indoor basketball courts, best-in-class wellness center to include ample functional,
strength and cardio training, a cycling studio, two group exercise studios, an outdoor
group exercise terrace, a teen/intergenerational room, community meeting spaces, and
a youth/family adventure space. The Easterseals space includes 7,000 square feet of
specialized therapy rooms, an applied behavior analysis (ABA) gym, a sensory/motor
skills gym, ABA classroom, and counseling rooms. In addition, Easterseals therapists and clients will have access to YMCA amenities to assist with their rehabilitative journey. “Easterseals is excited to be part of this transformative collaboration with the YMCA and OSF. This best-in-class facility will be a model for accessible, inclusive health and wellness programs and will help to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential”, stated Steve Thompson; President/CEO of Easterseals Central Illinois.
“This has been an incredible run, and we’ve surpassed our goal. We’re so appreciative of the community rising to this challenge”, indicated Steve Snyder, Campaign Co-Chair. “As a result of this, it has allowed us to build a best-in-class facility to meet the programming needs for youth, families, and seniors”.
The YMCA will be assuming approximately $3 million of long term financing toward the $23 million project and will continue to accept financial support to minimize indebtedness. “We are so grateful for the donors’ support and want to deliver a top notch YMCA that our community and donors expect. At the same time, we want to be good stewards by having a plan to negate any long term debt,” stated B.J. Wilken, YMCA CEO. The Y will continue to accept gifts to the campaign and will recognize all donors on the donor wall.
