Job Title: WAVES Swim Team Head Coach                             

Base Pay Rate: $18.00 - $25.00

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The WAVES Swim Team Head Coach at the Bloomington-Normal YMCA serves as the program administrator for the WAVES Swim Team, a Bronze Level USA Swimming competitive team participating in competition at the local, regional, and national levels. The WAVES Swim Team Head Coach is responsible for analyzing swim techniques and determining skill levels, developing individualized swimming programs, educating swimmers on various techniques and styles, and overseeing training while recruiting new talent and preparing swimmers for meets.

 

ABOUT THE WAVES SWIM PROGRAM AND BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL YMCA

The WAVES swim program has developed swimmers to World Championships, World Junior Championships, Olympic Trials, USAS Nationals, NCAA D-1 finalists, and has ranked as a Silver Medal club ten times since 2006.  The timing of this position opening is a significant opportunity for applicants as we embark on the expansion of a new, state-of-the-art 75,000 square foot facility, including an 8-lane competitive pool, in the heart of the community in a partnership with Easterseals of Central Illinois.  Projected to open in Summer of 2022, the team members of today will be the history-makers of tomorrow, bringing to our community the best that the YMCA has to offer.

 

Established in 1855, the Bloomington-Normal YMCA is the oldest continually existing human service organization in McLean County.  Bloomington, Illinois is the home of two universities, Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University, as well as corporate headquarters for State Farm Insurance and Country Financial. Located in Central Illinois, large city centers such as Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis are within a three hour drive. The Bloomington-Normal area includes strong public and private schools, a regional airport, bountiful dining options, and opportunities for youth and adult recreation and leisure.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Ensure high quality swim team programming through innovative program development and evaluation.
  2. Champion a culture of best-in-class program quality and experience in all assigned areas, including on- and off-site practice and meets, community partnerships, and swim team events.
  3. Ensure that programming aligns with all national, state, local, and YMCA quality standards. 
  4. Ensure safety for all program participants and ensure all safety standards are followed by team members.
  5. Expand programming within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  6. Partner with the Marketing department to ensure effective promotion and visibility of the swim team.
  7. Monitor and evaluate the success and effectiveness of all programming through measured statistical data.
  8. Determine ability and skill level of swimmers before setting up training programs.
  9. Develop and implement training programs that focus on improving technique, stroke placement, speed, and style.
  10. Teach new swimming styles and strokes utilizing a range of activities to improve confidence and ability.
  11. Record training sessions to analyze strokes, techniques, and monitor swimmer progress.
  12. Set individual training goals and objectives for all swimmers. 
  13. Motivate swimmers to achieve goals while fostering engagement and development.
  14. Educate swimmers on water safety.
  15. Scout swimmers to join the swim team.
  16. Plan and organize team meetings to ensure consistent communications, directions, and accountability.
  17. Develop and lead strategies to ensure swim team members connect with each other to foster a sense of community and servant leadership.
  18. Intentionally and continuously strives to promote a culture that values and strengthens diversity and inclusion.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum 4 years related experience.
  2. Current USA Swimming Coach Membership, including all certifications.
  3. Current American Swimming Coach Association Level 3 or higher certification.
  4. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  5. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  6. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, organization, and detail.
  8. Adept computer skills in standard office software programs.
  9. Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekend, and holidays.
  10. Able to respond to safety and emergency situations.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Seven years of related field experience.
  2. Fun, creative and imaginative mind is desired to continue the program growth trajectory.
  3. Communication proficiency in Spanish, both verbal and written

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. May work in a warm, humid environment.
  2. May be required to sit, stand, stoop, or kneel for extended periods of time.
  3. May be in water ranging from 80-90 degrees for an extended period of time.
  4. May be exposed to pool and cleaning chemicals.
  5. Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
  6. Must be able to see, hear, and communicate clearly and be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatics environment.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Travel to/from off campus sites is required and reimbursed at current GSA mileage rate.
