10 Dos and Don'ts of Pregnancy Fitness

Nicolette, here, to give you a quick introduction into the do’s and don’ts of exercise during pregnancy. At the YMCA, we focus on physical, spiritual and mental health, all equally as important. These health aspects are important to all ages and demographics, which is why I am providing a great article from Mother&Baby in which I am going to cover what I thought was most important. Firstly, always consult with your OB before starting an exercise program to understand which forms of exercise are most appropriate for you, but always remember, no matter what, to always breathe! Holding your breath during exercise can put strain on, not only your baby, but also your pelvic floor. Another great tip for pregnancy is avoiding exercises that have you lay flat on your back once you’ve hit the second and third trimester. The weight of your baby will place pressure on your spine and cut off blood flow to your vena cava blood vessel that carries oxygen to your heart. Lastly, STAY HYDRATED! Water is a large source of nutrition that is carried throughout your bloodstream to your baby and helps prevent pregnancy problems.
