The Bloomington-Normal YMCA positively affects the lives of nearly 4,000 individuals annually by providing healthy alternatives in a safe, friendly environment. Of these 4,000 individuals, half are under the age of 18 years. We strengthen community through youth development because we believe our community is stronger when all youth have the ability to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Take the stories of Taylor and Sam, for example:

Taylor is in junior high and is experiencing how tough adolescence can be. Taylor has been acting out, talking back to her parents and even recently ran away from home, forcing the police to bring her back. Taylor's mom enrolled her in Y Summer Day Camp, much to Taylor's dismay. After the first day of camp, Taylor discovered that she gets to be a junior camp counselor and was thrilled to go back the next day. Taylor's mom said "This is a great opportunity for her to be proud of the responsibility and to gain maturity. This really came at a time when we needed help in our family. So I just wanted to say 'thank you,' and that this program means a lot!" Like Taylor, 120 other kids are enrolled in Y Summer Day Camp this year. Parents report that as a result of their time with the Y, their children are developing new skills and increasing their confidence!

Sam is a nine year old who recently experienced the hurt of divorce. His mother and three younger siblings Emily, Jacob and Thomas were forced to move into a two bedroom apartment due to the foreclosure of their home. Sam’s mother works two jobs in order to pay the rent, utilities and put food on the table. She works very hard to make ends meet and would like to provide healthy opportunities for her children. Sam’s mom heard about the Y's swim lessons and decided to enroll all the children. As a result, the Y was able to provide swim lessons for all the children at a significantly reduced rate thanks to the YMCA Strong Kids Program.

These are just a couple of the stories outlining a few of the many lives that the Y impacts each day. Your investment in the YMCA helps perpetuate opportunities for children who otherwise would not be able to participate. Make a difference today!
